Ethylene is a colorless gas with a sweet odor. It is flammable at concentrations between 3.1 to 32% in air. The minimum flammable concentration of ethylene (3.1% or 31,000 ppm) is about 200 times the concentration suggested for various fruits ripening. Ethylene is a naturally occurring plant hormone. It is one of the simplest compounds affecting physiological processes in plants. Effects can be initiated at internal concentrations of 0.1 to 1.0 ppm (parts per million). Ethylene promotes ripening of apples, avocados, bananas, citrus (de-greening), dates, mangos, some melons, papayas, pears, persimmons, pineapples, and tomatoes. The physiological activity of ethylene is widespread among many plants. Ethylene is blended with air to a concentration of 150 ppm (Most common concentration for various applications) in the ripening room.
The Model 602µ
controller then maintains the ethylene concentration continuously by periodically doping the ethylene gas inside the room. Due to this, concentration of ethylene is sufficient to initiate ripening and rate of air exchange keeps carbon dioxide level increasing. The level of CO2 is monitored and controlled by way of scrubber or ventilation so that the concentration always remains below some fixed value (2% in case of mangos) at all times. The model comes with rugged and durable solenoid valves which are used to control the amount of ethylene required to dope the room with set value of concentration.
Model 602µ Controller.

By switching the room on the controller automatically starts to dose the room with ethylene and controls the concentration. The controller has up to 2 relay contacts (NO or NC) per room for ethylene and CO2 for any process automation of the basis alarm vales reached. The controller also has an option data-logging software which can store 10,000 sample points with sample rate from 1 to 255 seconds
Gas Sensing Transmitter.
The Model 602µ controls only single room. The sensor module is mounted inside the ripening room. It has a local display which indicates the concentration of gases present locally and also transmits thru a standard analog 4-20 mA current loop. The sensor is calibrated with the help of zero and span presets in the analyzer.
The Model 602µ controls the concentration of ethylene in cold rooms with the help of one master solenoid which is used as an redundant system so that the main supply can be switched off if any of the solenoid is leaking or is not working. Individual solenoids are present for each room which is turned on and off to maintain the set concentration of ethylene.
